Can anybody Please give a FOOLPROOF way of installing (activating?) fonts in OpenOffice (and all the other programs)? I pretty much installed anything that said 'font' after a 'yum find font*' (and was not obviously a different alphabet).
It did not change anything in Openoffice.
I am in particular looking for the 'old fashioned' fonts used most often in windows word, such as 'arial', 'helevetica', 'times', etc (or something indistinguishable).

I am running Fedora 7, and here is what I know about my font path:

'/usr/sbin/chkfontpath'
gives:
/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
/usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF
/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1

/usr/share/fonts/apl/pcf
/usr/share/fonts/apl/TrueType'

Thank you very much!

if you have a licensed copy of Windows, you can copy those Windows fonts to ~/.Fonts/ and they should be available to your app's

Chances are, those "old fashioned" fonts are already installed for you.

Arial/Helvetica = Nimbus Sans
Courier = Nimbus Mono
Times/Times New Roman = Nimbus Roman No. 9

These fonts don't have fancy hinting for use on screen like the Microsoft fonts, but on the printed page they are identical.

Are you running Gnome or KDE?

To everybody: Thanks for all the replies!

To happybunny:

I have legal office 2007, windows xp and vista copies, where do I look for the font files? Thanks.

To paj12:

Yes, I got those fonts, have to get them to a printer, but they look OK so far, thanks!

To JohT:

Sorry, forgot to mention that: I am running Gnome.

However, if you want the sub-pixel hinting (so it looks better on-screen), you can probably find the font files in the \windows\fonts directory off Windows's root directory.

I don't think the required .ttf files are available in raw form on the CDs anywhere, though.
