how do I find out how much ram my box sees?

It should tell you on bootup, but if you want to know from Linux, do 'cat /proc/meminfo' and look at the MemTotal line.

Sometimes what you will see at bootup will be different from what Linux sees. If you are using KDE, you can use DrakConf (I think it is called) to see all hardware, including memory.
