User Name Starting with a number? Can it be done!

I am fairly new to Linux and am tring to switch over my ISP to it however some of the users on the mail server have usernames such as "78howdy" and alike. From what I see Mandrake 7.2 refuses any username that starts with a number.. Is there a way around this??

probably not the easy way, but I could be wrong. what I did was edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files using vim. first do chmod 700 then edit the file then chmod 400.

I only had to do 1 use me. it has to be easier though.
