I am going to replace my "server" with one that can hold up to 12 hard drives, both PATA and SATA.

Most of the time, 11 of those 12 drives wont be doing anything as my user data will fit on only 1 drive...I wont be accessing the media on the other drives as often.

How can I reduce the power consumption of this thing?

hdparm (as far as I know) doesn't work on SATA yet.

But even so, is there a better way to reduce the power draw on a server?

When no one is using the server, can I get it into a sleep state so it draws even less?

If I remotely mount a drive I want to spin down when idle, do I have to unmount it from all my clients before it will "sleep"?

and if a drive is "sleeping", will it wake up when I mount it remotely?
