I've been noticing a bunch of discarded phones along the highways etc in the city. I've started gathering parts that might be useful. such as cameras and LCD screens. I've been looking around for resources for this type of thing and can;t really find anything. Has anyone tried anything like this? I think my only luck is going to be contacting the phone manufacturers and getting the specs from them, but I don't think they will give info like that easily.

doing some research to find the parts that are used in some of these phones might help some, but to be able to control most of the periphials you'll need the spec sheets to know the specifics. Only other way is to find similar devices and basically just hack and guess at the appropriate commands/sequences

Yeah, I went to the various manufacturer sites to find these specs, or even just part numbers with no luck before I came here. I found another site specific to this topic: http://www.electro-tech-online.com/
