Hi Guys,

Im about to buy a server to host standard edition oracle 10g for a 2 CPU machine and am wondering anywhere that does good servers for a reasonable price.

I need it to be compatible with ubuntu linux, as thats what the base operating system will be, but i dont want any hardware configuration issues, just want to be able to get a server, throw ubunutu then oracle on there, i want to get the best possible peformace at an affordable price. It can even be a really high powered desk top just as long as its reliable and quality.

Has anyone got any suggestions or websites i can check out?.

Whats your idea of reasonable price? If your talking $200-300 your looking at a dual pIII at best on ebay, $350-550 will put you into a p4 xeon unit. So at that price it may be better just to build a dual core system, that way you can pick the parts you know will work with Linux.

Edit: Also are you looking for a rack mount or tower unit? Plus what storage size you looking for, and do you want it to use raid, use scsi, sata, ide be hot-swap? If you go scsi, the drives are pricy, for the same price you can buy sata and have 10x the storage space.

Thanks,

Good idea, will the daul core work with Ubuntu linux and more importantly is it compatible with oracle 10g, i want to install everything smoothly, eg without the force option

Well I know dual core will work fine, I have a Amd dual core setup at home I use, and I think the newest kernel supports dual core off the gitgo now. If not you would just install a smp kernel image from ubuntu's repo list and be running in know time.
I've never used oracle 10g, so I'm not sure what it is, but if it's just a application I can't see why not.
