hello all,
please help me, i have bought new processor Duron 750 ram 256 megs ( so have no money now ), try using redhat 70 but don't like that, try using slackware 7.1 but rather using it at my campus, so i use redhat 62, installation succesfull, but when trying to boot, it says trying to DISABLING CPUID, but failed, then so many messages showed up, then it said kernel panic , and it said again ln swapper blabla bla bla...
Is it kernel problem ? because when using 2.2.16 (rh7) or 2.2.17(slack71) it doesn't happened, my rh use 2.2.14,
please help me.. or should i use mandrake 7.2 using kernel 2.2.17 ?
thanks.

*shakes head*

sorry nopri -- I'm not sure I follow completely ...
You bought new cpu and ram and installed them and now cannot boot from several PREVIOUSLY installed kernels? or are these fresh clean installs on the new processor?
(Personally I run Slack ...can't see why ya wouldn't stick with that my'self *grins*)

both.
when using my old computer, i installed rh 62, then buying new one, and putting my harddisk on new computer resulting error above.
Then making fresh installation with rh7, everything is okay, but want to back rh62, so making fresh installation on rh62, resulting error above....

... :)

if using lilo, when the prompt comes up

type "linux serial_nr=1" instead of just linux

then recompile the kernel, selecting your cpu tpye and disable cpuid

nopri,

The problem is that RH 6.2 is trying to determine the CPU ID, which Intel processors have, but AMD chips don't. I can't remember if this is something that you can disable in the BIOS, or if you have to feed RH 6.2 some extra parameters, but I found some info on the issue and posted it in one of the forums here last month. I don't really have the time to go back and find it right now, but try the Forum Search, using CPU ID as your search criteria. Also, do a general web search on "cpu id"; I think that's how I found the original info.

nopri, that's exactly what you need to do. The same problem has been posted here a couple times over the past few days.

Do a search for 'CPUID'.
