How can we help if we have no knowledge of the video card you are using?

The X-Windows configuration file is stored as /etc/X11/xorg.conf which is a text file you can edit.

By selecting the correct driver, use "vesa" if others are not working, and the correct scanning frequencies in HorizSync and VertRefresh statements there should give you the best display.

saikee, this thing's a laptop with the ATi Radeon Mobility chipset.

Hooboy, where do we start?

You can try this (http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html).
If you were using any of the Fedora distros, there's an even better solution for you, but I digress...

An older thread discussing Debian modules is here (http://sylvestre.ledru.info/howto/presario_2500_vo.php). Some things may no longer apply (RHEL4 has an improved kernel), so I'm going to guess you'll just want the display up and running for now. Just in case, bookmark the link for future reference of the hardware in that laptop so you can Google "RHEL4 %hardware %module" if you have trouble with anything else.

Once the proper module for the ATi is loaded, it should then be able to auto-detect the LCD and set the resolution and scan frequencies through DDC.
