Is blackbox a WindowManager or DesktopEnvironment? I got it, installed it and ran it when no WM was going, and it seemed to be just a WM.

The only DE's I can think of are KDE and GNOME. Why do you need a small DE? If you're worried about performance, just forget about the DE and go with a straight WM. You don't really need a DE at all.

XFce I think fits into the DE category (just) and it's small and quick.

 XFce (http://www.xfce.org)

I forgot that I didnt need a DE at all. I get in by loging in as FAILSAFE in RH and typing a WM (usually Blackbox) into the console. Is that how you do it? Also, how do I get into text only mode (dos-like)?

You either edit /etc/inittab and change the line
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:
Or usually just pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<1 thru 6> will get you to a terminal.

I boot into runlevel 3 (that's the standard text startup) and if I want to get into X, I just use 'startx'. I have WindowMaker set to run and I just use the features it provides without a DE.
