okay, I've ran make config (which took forever)
I'm ready to make dep, but each time I try and use that command or make bzdisk/bzimage, I get the following error:

make: gcc: Command not found
make: *** [scripts/mkdep] Error 127

I'm running mandrake 7.2, the make sources/binaries are installed, and the 'make clean' command works.

**** man, and they call Drake a NEWBIE distro???? FSCK POS MANDRAKE!!!!
I even dedicated a thread to this in February here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002933)

OK, "gcc" is the compiler that needs to compile the freshly configured kernel.
Now you need to install that!
(this is absurd, what distro doesn't include gcc out of the box???)

BTW...weren't you able to "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig"????

Dude, perhaps you're not mad 'cuz you wouldn't know any better, but by now I would've burned the FSCKING Drake Cds/Box-set.

It's this kind of stuff that keeps me going tellin' people SuSE is a much better newbie distro. D@MN!

Good luck and keep us posted, you're not supposed to go through this kinda pain to compile a measly kernel.

Pfff...it's SUPPOSED to be on the CDs you got...though by now it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't even there.

Didyou BUY or d/l the distro?
Maybe you're missing a CD??
I wish some people with Drake experience could help you...they'd prolly know where stuff are.

If the file's there it's prolly called gcc-sumthin-2.95.2.rpm or something like that. (The latest *stable* version -I think- is 2.95.3, so MDK7.2 should have a version between 2.95.0 and 2.95.3)

Last time I saw the website was: http://gcc.gnu.org

Dunno, lotsa people swear by Debby.
I got the exact same problem as you right now -and MORE trouble- with Debian.

I used it for 4 days and I had enough; switched to Slackware...which I love.

Both Deb and Slack aren't really for newbies, like I said I'd STRONGLY recommend SuSE for starters...but I think the d/l-version misses a lot of apps that you can find in the retail version.
I bought SuSE6.4 and have never regretted it.

It all depends on what sort of install you did, Mandrake does not load the gcc libs by default,

Exactly... Was gonna ask if you did a full install. I find that doing anything but a full will get you in trouble eventually.
