How can i enable something like gkrellm to start up when i log into my machine?

You could add the command to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

If it is a desktop program (requires GUI) then the procedure is specific to whatever desktop you use.

Actually it might not work in rc.local When rc.local is run, the GUI isn't started yet. It would be better to put it in your ~/.xinitrc
