I have a low profile box that I'm trying to convert into a headless server machine. The BIOS refuse to POST without a video card. It doesn't mention booting without a video device in the BIOS, but it does have a "Halt on" value with a "No errors" option. It's a problem because the low profile card I have in there right now is too hot for the small case and consumes too much power for the small PSU.
The mobo is an mATX chaintech 7NIL1-summit, with an nforce2 chipset and award BIOS.

Any help/suggestions appreciated, it might be that it just isn't possible.

EDIT:
Also, it does have a BIOS option to use CGA 40, CGA 80, or Mono (which I assume is MDA), instead of VGA. I have no idea if this helps, I just thought I might mention it.

I tried this too, but never succeded. You might find some old slow vga card and solve the problem.

Yeah, I would, but I can't find any really crappy low profile cards to fit in the case.

How tall can the card be? I've got a couple of Trident 1mb VGA AGP cards (enough abbreviations there?) thats fairly short..

Really short, and it also needs a low profile clip. It's about half the height of a normal card, maybe smaller.

EDIT:
I was going to buy this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102435) if I couldn't find anything else. That's about how small it needs to be. I can probably take off the clip.

can you run it without the case?

I could, but I don't really want to; it's going to be a firewall router inside a closet with other older machines that are clustered.

EDIT:
Because I figured that this machine wouldn't need to run at 2ghz for what it's going to do, I cut the FSB down from 166 to 133 so that it runs a bit cooler and takes less power. I also took out the CD drive and floppy drive. It runs cool enough now that I can keep the video card in there, but if anyone knows of any way to make it boot without a video card, I'm still interested.
