So I decided to try Kubuntu on my stationary computer as well since it did so good on my laptop. Of course nothing is ever that easy, now is it?

First the live cd wouldn't boot until I added acpi=off to the kernel boot options. After the installation and upgrading to latest available kernel (2.6.20-16) I still have to use acpi=off to be able to boot my installed system. If I don't I get a segmentation fault during the boot process right after running

"Starting acpi services OK"

Then the system stops, no X shows but I can reach the console. In dmesg I can something possibly related to the errors:

pcc_acpi: loading...
kernel BUG at drivers/acpi/osl.c:448!
invalid opcode: 0000 [#1]

Now, having acpi=off in my boot options wouldn't be a big issue for me if it wasn't for the fact that the computer won't power off by itself anymore. When running "halt" or "shutdown -h now" it stops with a message saying "System will now halt" and I have to power off with the power button.

Does anyone have any idea how to get acpi working? I've googled and found out that this isn't that uncommon but I failed to find a solution.

Also, I have no idea if this is related to my acpi problems (probably not) but I'm getting random x-crashes with my brand new nvidia 7900GS graphics card. After X has crashed my wireless (RF) keyboard and mouse behave erratically. Pressing a key might result in several keypresses or none. Moving the mouse is a real struggle since it doesn't quite obey. Anyway, that was off topic, the most pressing issue is the acpi problem. Anyone have any ideas about that? Any other logs I should try to attach?

Thanks a bunch

what other hardware are you using besides the nvidia card?

From the top of my head (I'm at work and can't check the details right now):

Soundcard: Audigy ZS 2
Tvcard: Pinnacle PCTV 300i
Wireless: Can't remember the brand right now... I'll get back on that one.
Built-in LAN

The mobo is a no-name "green motherboard" from Fujitsu-Siemens (the pc is a Scaleo X).

Both OpenSuse and Gentoo have worked fine on this machine.

Ok problem solved.

Well, not really, I simply gave up and went back to my old faithful Gentoo. Every now and then I get an impulse to change my main distro and Kubuntu has been very tempting. It always ends like this though, with me going back to Gentoo because of some minor annoyance. In this case it was a major annoyance though...
