Redhat v7.2. on-board sound card supports sb16, wss, & joystick. I used sndconfig to set sb16. I can play mp3 and rm files, but can't play audio CD (it plays with no sound).

check the volume control.

If the above doesn't work, also make sure that you have an actual audio cable connected to the cdrom (and motherboard).

I can play mp3 files so volume is OK. CD-ROM connection is OK. Both cables are connected.

this worked for me.
be root and type in depmod -ae.
as soon as i did this the cd started playing.
