I installed Mandriva 2007 Powerpack on my computer and I am having problems booting to Linux. This computer has a 120 Ghz hard drive for Linux and a 30 Ghz hard drive for windows. This is the same setup I had for MDV 2005 PP and had no problems. I was using GRUB but I switched to LILO. The problem is that it won't always boot to Linux, the first drive LILO sees. It will load to the point of: Welcome To Mandriva Linux 2007.0

Press 'I' to enter interactive setup

Configuring kernel parameters: (OK)

Setting clock (localtime): Tues May 1 xx:xx:xx CDT 2007 (OK)

Loading default keymap (OK)

Setting hostname localhost (OK)

And that is as far as it will go. Now on boot I have pressed 'enter' and not pressed 'enter' and sometimes it will load Linux but, most of the time it will not. It will also hang when scrolling down to 'failsafe' to try and run that. But if I want to go to windows it always will load. I had this problem with a smaller hard drive that I put MDV 2007 PP on and as long as I didn't press 'enter' on boot it would load OK. But of course it would always hang if I pressed 'enter'. I haven't shut down sine early Tuesday morning, because it is such a hassle to load Linux. I don't mind it too much but the wife complains because the computer is using electricity.

Any ideas??

Try the noacpi option.

:) Thank you. That seems to have cured the problem. I had thought of turning off the ACPI, but didn't think it would affect my old box. I installed this same OS on a friends box but, his is new and is a 64bit system and it was turn off ACPI or don't have any kind of Linux. Being mine is an older 32bit system I didn't think it would matter but it definitely does.

Just to mention also, this site always seems more helpful than the Mandriva site. More often than not if I have a problem I will post there first. Sometimes I get an answer and sometimes I don't. I always get good advice here. I have been a Linux user for 6 years and maybe they think I should figure out my own problems, or whatever. At least here I get good help.

You're welcome. You can acpi to off in the MCC- Boot - set up how the system boots, and un ticking the enable acpi. Remember to save it though.;)

That is what I did. First I thought I would get that info on boot like when the MDV DVD is in but it wasn't there, so I went to MCC and How the System Boots and changed it there. Mind you a couple years ago I would have been leery of making any changes but I am getting more confident at these things.

Makes me feel good about what I am doing. Of course I would be OK if there would have been a problem because I feel better about what I am doing. Although like I said before this site has been more helpful over the years than Mandrake/Mandriva. I feel I should post there first as it is for the OS I use. And yet my first thought when I need to post a problem is to come here first.
