No. That's not a joke.
The second thing to check, since it IS a laptop, is to make sure that you don't have a mute button and, if it is, make sure that the red light is off.
(No, this isn't a joke either.)

And the third thing to check is whether the speakers are digital. Alsa configures your sound card to output analog by default (and it's also possible that your card's digital output isn't even supported under Alsa, but this depends on what kind of information the Alsa developers are able to get for your sound chip). And analog output doesn't work with digital speakers, for what are hopefully obvious reasons. :)
You can probably find out by looking closely at the Windows mixer; IIRC it shows some kind of indication when it's using a digital output. Not sure on that though. You could also look up your speakers' model numbers (if they aren't built into the laptop), and see if you can find out from them.
And if this is the issue, then I'm not sure how to fix it, but there's probably something that you can either add to your .asoundrc file, or something that you can configure somewhere in alsamixer. It depends on how the sound card exposes its digital-output. (Personally, I just make sure I only buy analog speakers, but that doesn't work well when you already have the speakers that you want to use.)

Do I look like I'm joking?
alsamixer gives you about a dozen settings, line in, master volume, synth, pc speakers, so on and so forth.
If you don't want advice don't ask!!!
