Speaker is not working after Installed Linux..

Hi,
My friend Installed Linux recently in his system but his speaker is not working now.. His System confiquration is PIV 2.3GHz Processor but Mercury Mother board, I feel driver is not installed properly..
I think his mother board cd is damaged (little bit scratch there),
I want to know if we use Linux means we should set something etc than windows os..

Speaker has nothing to do with software... i suppose u are talking about the sound card?
Wats his sound card?

Common problems:

Speaker muted by default - ?alsamixer.
By default user does not belong to the audio group - does it work for root?

Edit: Just to clear up any potential confusion, this is the second time that samuel77 has put spam links in his sig. I removed them once and asked him not to do it again, and he did so anyway. Because he's banned his sig no longer shows up, but if anyone is curious I still have a copy.
