Well if you have a image(ISO), you can try isobuster(i think that's the name), he decompress the files to a dir that you specify, but this is a windows program, i don't know anyone for linux.
Good Luck

i'm not sure if this is your problem.. anyways, if you can't make it bootable, do this: file (i suppose, i never saw nero) -> new bootable (well, a button which makes a bootable cd) -> then it will let you choose which file you want to burn, though you can only specify from a certain filetype, which isn't .iso. you have to tell it to show ALL items, and then select the bootable. it will start just like a normal cd-burning, though this will work; you'll be able to boot from that cd

If you have the ISO, you need to choose 'File-->Burn From Image' on the Nero menu. If the ISO is a bootable image, it will boot your machine, if not, I can't think of a practical way of creating a bootable version of the same ISO image; it would be more work than it's worth.
