i really wish that the linux community would band together somehow and donate to filming a linux commercial. i had this idea on the way to the office this morning. if everyone was made aware of a central donation point - and somehow assured that the donation would serve the cause - we could film a commercial and get some airtime! with all of the bad press out there right now on microsoft the time to do something like this has never been better. with distro's like ubuntu, opensuse, etc...if people were aware of how easy the switch to linux can be, i think linux could gain a serious share of the PC market. people are sick of MS and their shady business practices and a lot of people are switching to MAC as a result. if they were aware of another alternative - and a MUCH less expensive one at that - they would be more inclined to give linux a shot.

the problem with that is the actual development of the advertisement. Linux users can't even agree on what WM / DE, music app, or distro to use. Imagine have 3 million linux users trying to come up with an advertisement......wow

it seems to me that the answer would be obvious. the most user-friendly desktop enviro, kde - the things that come closest to windows so users would think it looks comfortable. then spice it up with beryl or something for a real 'wow' effect. unlike microsoft and their stupid vista 'wow'.

I do tv spots for a living so if anyone could make this happen I would volunteer my time.

That's one of the great things, the choice ( leading to diversity ). Imagine if all you had was KDE?

If we could just get those 3 million people to chip in a dollar each, towards the project, it would be worth the hassle.

Anyone remember the big push in commercials for Linux from IBM a few years ago? IBM is not exactly a small player. Again this is all about evolution, not revolution. As the stupid Windows users either a) learn better or b) we just keep getting bigger, we'll still win. We need to keep getting our servers in the data centers one or two at a time, until they're serving all the email, hosting websites or serving data. On the desktop side, things will just happen naturally. Let a few more viruses or a new Microsoft licensing scam take place and we've won. Patience is a virtue here people.
