As usual search function doesn't work good enough to be usable. It's like seeing an unclothed movie star in the movies: tempting but not practical.

Anyway, I bought Mandrake 7.02 for i486 from Cheapbytes, and planned to install it on an old Dell 433/L with 540 MB HD (Caviar).

I have tried it a number of times, using floppy install and txt_boot.img and in each case, it starts:

Making ext2 filesystem on hda1

After a few minutes, it comes back with a message:

Install exiting abnormally -- received signal 9

followed by the usual linux shutdown messages. I tried several ways, including selecting individual packages, which showed lots less space needed than available.

Then, I tried it quick leaving out all KDE and Graphics stuff, which should put it way under HD size.

I also tried cdrom.img from 8.0, with obvious likely problems, and will next try cdrom.img from 7.2. Also, I will try txt_boot.000 since someone on another forum said they beat an unknown install problem with that image.

Any idea what this error might involve??

First, I tried successfully to install Drake 7.2 (which is not the same as 7.02 for i486). So, I knew the computer and HD was correct.
The only weird stuff was the usual "menu off the bottom of the screen" size problem I usually get on Desktops, though I never have that problem on my Presario 1236 laptop. And, it came up with Gnome, not KDE. There were a lot of boxes which started to load, then went on, thus bypassing the decision process. I am wondering if some of this involves treating mouse movement like a click??

Then, I went back and tried 7.02 again. The problem was CUSTOM. When I tried to use Work Station, the prompts made it sound like that was a terrible mistake. Yet, when I went back and used Work Station install, it went on into install.

The install is not complete. I have not yet got the video to work for X (KDE). And, I get the dreaded LI at boot, thus need to use the custom boot disk. (Hey, I did something right when I made that sucker during install.) However, I consider these problems minor, at this point. I have on my laptop, some URL screens on Lilo stuff, and expect that I will find a combination of video and monitor which will work.

In any case, even if only for training, I have another linux machine. Also, I may well take HD to Mexico and put it in my 486 when my nephew no longer needs it. (The government doesn't seem to be able to afford a Word Processor for a man who is in charge of the computer section in his political subdivision of the city, so I loaned him my old 486, with WP it does what he wants to do.)
