Yeah, it's me (the total newbie :() again :D
Since it seems so simple to install redhat, i'd want to start right away... if only i knew what filez to download from the ftp.
on the download.xs4all.nl FTP (/pub/mirror/redhat/releases/guinness/i386/iso) i have found maybe the things i need...
- 7.0-ja-i386-disc1.iso
- 7.0-ja-i386-disc2.iso
Is this what i need as a newbie ? But 2 CD'S for an OS ??? Is that right ??

Yup, the iso files are image files that you should burn to a cd....don't just put the CD's on a cd, you need to make the Cd's from these image files.
good luck :)

You'll get loads of apps on the first CD as well as the O/S and even more on the second disk. Programs you get include: a number of ftp servers, many web servers, office software, mp3 players, web browesers, fire walls... actually you get pretty much all you're ever going to need on the first CD and all but the kitchen sink on the second CD (which is optional BTW.)

I learned on Redhat so I have done about 50 installs, lol. The only things I would imagine you may need on disc 2 would be taper (a nice tape backup util) and netscape browser (not communicator).
You might as well just get the first disc and do a non-custom install. I am pretty sure everything will be on disc 1. Anything else you can always get later from rpmfind.net or somewhere...

If you have a decent internet connection, and don't want to D/L the cd images, do a network install. Read the install doc's to find out which floppy images you need.

keep in mind that most linux distros (notice, distribution, not OS) are not just the OS...it is the OS and almost every piece of software you could want. it would be like windows coming on two cds and including office, quicken, netscape, AIM, ICQ, mIRC, Napster, Real Player, Photoshop, etc. linux distros look big because they give you almost everything, not just the basics (what can you realy do with an OS only?)

Thx for the help !
But what is bleg26 talking about ? A network install ? I'm on ADSL so my connection is descent enough. Is the network install something like the windows update but more advanced ? So if you've got the network install of let's say Redhat 6.2 it would auto-upgrade to 7.1 or so ? Would come in handy since these distro's change so often...

PS: I'm learning !! :D

Basically you start with 5 files for Debian which gets you the basics then install everything else from a network connection or over the internet.
Never done one with redhat, so don't know how that would go though.

Ah ok nevermind then :-)
I'll just get those 2 iso's... it'll take maybe 2hours to d/l and a half hour to write... don't you just love the technology of today ? :D

- 7.0-ja-i386-disc1.iso
- 7.0-ja-i386-disc2.iso
Never downloaded RH, so am not familiar with their naming conventions. What is the 'ja' for in the filename? Japanese? Just thought I would mention this just in case. You wouldn't want to waste the time and a couple of CD's.
Anyone knows differently, please reply.

Actually, you download the network floppy image and rawrite2.exe. Run the rawrite2.exe to copy the floppy image to a floppy disk. Then boot from the floppy, and it starts a text install(same as a normal GUI install). It'll only download what is to be installed, about 200Mb, instead of 1Gb or more if you D/L the CD images.
