I am completely new to liunx and have just installed Mandrake 8.0. What I need to know is how to give users the ability to access the various drives such as the floppy drive and cdrom drive. As it stands now I can't even access them with my root account. It just pops up an error message saying I don't have access right to /mnt/floppy when trying to access the floppy drive. What gives?

Let me ask the simple.. Did you already mount it? Check man mount for its usage. Chances are that you can do everything with Root account. If you can't even access with Root, then you must not mount it yet........ And if you don't want to mount it manually every time, you can set up to have automount file system...

I checked using linuxconf and all my drives are already mounted. What else could it be?

Since you've already figured out how to run linuxconf, you should be able to use it to give users access to the floppy and cdrom drives. Go here (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Spotlight/DiskDrake/pages/diskDrake10.php3) and check out this demo for adding a new drive. Go through the whole demo for adding the hard drive. There are six pages to go through.
Then run linuxconf. After you get a listing of the different mount points, it says at the top of the box that you can edit mounts. I guess that you just click on the mount point that you want to edit ,like /mnt/floppy or /mnt/cdrom, and the add button might change to edit. Then click on it and see if you can change things to allow you and other users access.

Actually, mandrake 7.2 had a bug with acess rights to CDROMS and CDBURNERS <dual CD;s>
I had that prob. here is a link that fixed the CD access rights error, maybe <MAYBE> it will work with the floppy as well....if all eles fails...reload :)
If you are a newbie like me, reloading will come in handy....lol http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/
