Hi, I can't install either win xp or mandriva one linux. When I try installing win xp it freezes in the middle of the process of installing devices... with mandriva one the thing is a little bit different: it says the installation was succesful but when I try to boot from the hard disc it does not boot...it freezes while it is booting... Do you think I have a problem with the (installation) discs or with my hard disc? I am learning how to install OS's in my only computer:D and that is driving me crazy! (I lost all data on the HD)

Things you might want to know: I have deleted partitions (with win xp disc and with linux disc), I have formatted the whole hard drive (160GB) too. None of these seem to work.

Thanks in advance! Oh, please tell me what distro you use and which one you recommend for begginers, ok?

I use gentoo (not recommended for beginners) and it sounds like you are having hardware problems...possibly bad RAM, drive, mobo, PSU....take your pick. If I were you I'd download and burn the .iso from here: http://gentoo.netnitco.net/releases/x86/2006.1/installcd/ and then use the memtest86 feature to check your ram. Let it run for a couple of hours and if it generates any errors you know you have bad RAM, at least.

How can I download an .iso when I don't have access to my HD? I am accessing the Internet via Mandriva One Live.

je_fro

well, can you mount any partition on the drive?

mkdir /mnt/temp
mount /dev/hdXY /mnt/temp
cd /mnt/temp && wget http://gentoo.netnitco.net/releases/x86/2006.1/installcd/install-x86-minimal-2006.1.iso

Now it boots from the HD but it freezes very often. What do you think? Is it the memory? Does it explain the problem with win xp installing too? I am buying another distro (openSuse). I lost kurumin...

I agree with je_fro, you're probably dealing with a hardware problem. Please run a bootable CD with memtest86 to check your RAM, it can detect errors that aren't being seen during the BIOS' routine startup check. In my case one RAM bar was faulty and everything was smooth again after I replaced it.

memtest86 is not only to be found on Gentoo CDs, many other liveCDs feature it, too. Just grab one that features the test and run it.

I think kurumin features the memory test. I have already downloaded another version of it but now i am having problems to install k3b so i can burn the iso into a disc. When I insert ./configure i get this:

running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

What is that? Can anyone tell me, please? I don't wanna buy a Suse disc without knowing what is the problem with my pc. (mandriva is working from the HD, but it still freezes very often)

dkeav

it can also be installed to an HD and booted with grub

Parcival

I recommend you get a liveCD from a magazine cover, have a friend write one for you, or have one shipped to you from Ubuntu. Or do as dkeav recommends.

why can't you install k3b using your distros package manager? or burn the cd with cdrecord or a dvd with growisofs?

Gaius_Caesar
02-22-2007, 07:32 PM
Mr je_fro, because i don't know how to use my distro package manager or what growisofs is/means.

Mr parcival, i have ordered some ubuntu discs... but it may take months 'til they get to me. I don't know anyone who has linux discs.

I have to burn this .iso... no matter what.

Barnes and Noble book stores used to carry linux magazines featuring a distro of the month.

On the other hand, I don't see any errors listed in your configure. Have you tried "make"?

I once downloaded kurumin iso image, burn it into a CD, installed into the hard disk and didn't have to do anything special.

It was a challenge to me as I didn't know a word of Portuguese. However it is a Debian and so I could follow the installer and eventually installed it in the hard disk and able to change the language to English.

If your Mandriva freezes it is most likely due to a video mismatch. Pressing ctrl+alt+backspace can ususally revert you back to terminal mode with which you can reconfigure the xorg and attempt to go GUI again with command "startx".

Each of my Kurumin and Mandriva was installed in a 5Gb partition. I have one swap partition used by every Linux

You can get just about any distro from www.pctech101.com if you have no way to download it, Ubuntu 6.10 will cost $5.00 free shipping. Or PM me with a address if you live in the US and I'll send you Ubuntu 6.06 I don't have the newest 6.10 yet. but you can do a upgrade to 6.10.

je_fro
02-23-2007, 12:44 AM
if you have a cd iso (named somefile.iso) you can burn it (usually) like this:
cdrecord somefile.iso

Gaius_Caesar
02-23-2007, 10:04 PM
I will try what you said, Mr je_fro. And I remember now why I have deleted winxp and kurumin... both were freezing, I thought installing another distro or reinstalling them would sove the problem... but you are probably right, it's the RAM memory. Should I open another thread to ask help in finding the right RAM memory for my computer?

Mr mrrangerman43, thanks for the offer, that was very kind of you, really! But I live quite far from the States. Besides I know a national website that "sells" Ubuntu, Kurumin, etc and I think I should save money to pay for the new memory, if that's the case.

Mr BlackHawk1966, we don't have Barnes and Noble book stores around... I live in a weird region of the Earth.

Mr dkeav, sorry for the late reply and I am too stupid to install an OS from the HD... I can't even burn an .iso on Mandriva One!

dkeav
02-23-2007, 11:09 PM
its not really an OS just a floppy image, as long as you put it somewhere on your HD you can tell grub to boot it and go from there

as jefro stated if you can get your OS to run long enough just download an iso and use the cdrecord command to burn that iso to a cd

example cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hdc somefile.iso /dev/hdc being the device name of your burner

or you can download memtest86 binary and place it in /boot/memtest.bin for example

then in grub

title = Memtest86
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/memtest.bin

I just bought Linux Format magazine there and it came with a free copy of Suse 10.2 DVD which includes memtest as one of the options when you boot the DVD up to install it.

What resources do you have available? tell us what you have and maybe we can give more ideas to try.

Any diagnostic , rescue, or utility CD's, any repair CD's that came with computer, flashdrives that could hold another program, Can your computer bios be set up to boot from flash drive? How old is your computer and what kind of software do you own and run on it? Any warranty for repair? Any repair places near by? Any other computers or parts available for swap and test?

Open up your case and turn your computer on. Are your fans spinning?? Specifically the one on your CPU. I have a feeling it could be an over heating problem since the memory test passed.

je_fro
02-25-2007, 02:06 AM
yeah, overheating sounds like a good possibility at this point...

dkeav
02-25-2007, 02:21 AM
you say things from HD lag, could also be an issue with your HD and or cable
usually there will be tons of errors spit out into /var/log/messages though if this were the case

if your HD supports it you might try running some SMART tests, though they are not conclusive evidence of anything they can sometimes be useful in diagnosis of a failing drive

Gaius_Caesar
02-25-2007, 12:03 PM
Mr dkeav, I have checked /var/log/messages and there is nothing there. I will follow the other advice too, thanks!

Calipso, the fans are working... I know that because whenever they stop, my computer becomes noisy.

"Any diagnostic , rescue, or utility CD's, any repair CD's that came with computer, flashdrives that could hold another program, Can your computer bios be set up to boot from flash drive? ------No CD's that came with computer. I have a 1GB and a 512MB flashdrive, I think they can hold another program. I am not sure about the bios setup, but we can try...what do you say? My computer is 4 years old and I use it to download videos and music and to browse on the Internet...so Bit Torrent,P2P appls and Firefox is what I usually need installed (Win Media Player and Sonic Stage too). No warranty. There are repair places within 5 km but I don't trust them anymore...they f- my screen. I don't have other computers anymore. I have a video player with a 30 Gigs HD on it but i don't think it's possible to use it on linux (it has Windows Mobile installed and I don't want to lose my videos and songs).

GOOD NEWS: I have transferred the memory to another slot and it stopped freezing while I'm running Mandriva... I can even use java on it (Azureus). But I can't install Winxp, it always stuck on 37 minutes for the ending of the install. I think it is the CD... it's from the same brand as the one in which I had burnt Kurumin. I will try burning another winxp iso on a DVD...that is if k3b accepts DVDs this time. I didn't say it before but cdrecord is not supported by my dvd recorder...at least that's what the messages say when I try to record an iso using it.

Bye!
