how to hack a theme?

I have a theme for WM that I really like, the problem is that I can not find a good matching theme for GTK. The Wm one is a purple sphere one and the icons are purple as well. The best theme I can find for it for GKT is a darkish light blue. There is a nice dark purple one but it is too dark. I want to lighten the background colors some so that I can read the words on the screen. What do I do? All I have to do is vi I the file and rename it and save then choose it as my new theme right? Or am I going to get into the compiling code thing? I haven't done any kind of coding in about 4 years so let me know if I am in over my head and I will leave well enough alone. Thanks for any info.

What I've always done in the past is find the images that it uses and Gimp them up (works with Sawfish themes). You'll have to run Gimp as root. Restart X and voila!
