Question about graphics performace

I have an AMD Tbird 1ghz with 256 MB DDR and Voodoo 3 AGP card. when i run the gears program i get about an average of 46 FPS that isn't very good is it?? i would think i should get faster. anyone know what i can do to increase my graphics performance?? this is on Mandrake 8.1 with X 4.1.0

what is your window manager? I have 2 different setups, 1 for general computer use and another for games. I use KDE for general computer use, but i use a very simple blackbox setup for games. KDE is massively bloated, and i don't need that stuff when gaming. Also, what rez are you at and what screen depth (16, 24 or 32?)

For the Voodoo3, the res. needs to be 16bpp for hardware acceleration, at least for OpenGL. If you set the res. higher than 16bpp, then OpenGL uses software rendering.

I use gnome/sawfish and it's already set to 16bpp any other ideas?? :)
