[i posted this in Softare related but no one had an answer, so im hoping someone here will]

Does there exist a CLI Divx/Mpeg player?
Im trying to make a Standalone linux box with a network connection to be file storage for all my AVI/MPEG/MP3 files. But the computer will be sitting near my TV/Stereo.

So i want to boot and play Divx/Mpeg files fullscreen from the CLI. [main reason for this is cause it will be in my TV room so not really room for a mouse, and i am SERIOUSLY considering using an IR remote controll.

Right now all im looking for is a CLI only [remember NO X cause itll look bad on the TV] Divx or even just MPEG player... [worse comes to worse ill install a large drive and decompress all the DIVX files to VCD quality mpegs... that is if a CLI mpeg player exists.]

As for the MP3's ill just use 123mpeg... so really all i want is a CLI movie player.

Anyhelp is very much obliged. Ive searched EVERYWHERE and all i can find is AALIB... which isnt really an option.

you are outputting the movie to the tv?

I haven't done that myself.

aalib is aascii art. The "plaympeg" program uses it if you don't have X. I don't think this is what you want.

How does having X affect your TV? Or is it just that you don't want a monitor?

Basically i want it to be like a standalaone steroe or standalone DVD player. NO monitor once its setup, easy remoteconroll useage [IRMP3 sounds good for MP3] basically a computer turned into stand alone player

ok... where can i find these?

mpegplayer and Playvideo are for the CLI i know that much [freshmeat.net] but i cant find many others. Keep in mind that they need to be started and run in CLI mode ONLY no X-Windows. Period.

sorry im an idiot. This is one of those cases where it pays to RTFM!

Mplayer supports SVGALIB for playing movie files. [SWEET!] This means i only need a 800 megs HD for my Linux partition and i can have 7 gigs of Mpegs and Divx and 3 gigs of MP3's

what kind of processor are you using with Mplayer. I've tried using mplayer to run Divx movies but the framerate of them is unnacceptable when used with the -framedrop argument. I'm running it on a system with a celeron 366 processor w/ 128mb ram running Slackware. Any idea what the minimum processor I need is to get decent video?

I'm running it with -vo fbdev at the command line only. Svga video is corrupted, but I can tell it's not moving any faster

i have no idea...
my system is a celeron 466 w/ 128 mb ram...

you might want to check how many services your running... since this box is going to sit there i only need file services, [no web, no SQL, actually theres alot i dont need]

my next goal is to find a nice looking file browser front end for this system. Im looking into hacking ZGV source to make it 'kinda' look like Direct TV. But ive yet to look at the source code of it.

Anyone have any other alternative to file viewing? [its only gonna be for MP3's and DIVX. Ive got some programs for an MPG123 svgalib front end but what about mpeg and avi files? [or my hackers vivo format, oldskewl baby]
