Hi, I am starting a new thread with this, taken from Blackbelt's why fluxbox is so cool thread.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I am running OpenSuse 10.2, and I can't seem to figure out how to make Fluxbox show up in my Sessions list. I am currently running Gnome, but I also have KDE and XFCE installed and want to play around with Fluxbox. I have installed fluxbox-1.Orc2-2.i586.rpm via Smart Gui as well as rpm -ivh and it just won't show up in the sessions list. Have I done something wrong?

which login manager? gdm/kdm?

have you looked here http://fluxbox.org/docs/en/faq.php#gdm"

I don't know if it's gdm or kdm, its whatever suse10.2 uses, with Gnome, I would assume gdm.

I have looked at the faq, and I don't have either one of these files on my system.

/etc/gdm /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/fluxbox

I got the rpm from the packman site. It's a big repository for SUSE stuff.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

Try adding a fluxbox.desktop file to /usr/share/xsessions/

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Fluxbox
Comment=Finally
Exec=fluxbox
Icon=
Type=Application

I agree with the comment made by cybertron, if you use a verion that isn't shipped for your distro you can end up running into all sorts of issues.

I installed flux through Ubuntu's synaptic. Originally I used an unofficial repository, got the wrong version and several things went south. Once I installed the supported version, which I think is a couple of versions behind, the session list was modifed automagically.

You also may want to add

[Window Manager]
SessionManaged=true

to the end of your fluxbox.desktop file.

That was it. Now I just have to try and figure out how to configure it!

Glad it worked. Configuring Fluxbox is really easy, if you have any problems I'm sure blackbelt_jones or one of us other fluxbox users will be able to help ;)

ok, I have been editing my menu, adding things that I want....but I have a question: how can I pull up the menu via keystroke, when I have windows maximized?

What I think you're looking for is the RootMenu keybind at the bottom of this page (http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docbook/en/html/x353.html).

I've set my FB system up to always place the toolbar at the uppermost layer, meaning it's always visible which I prefer. Because my toolbar width is less than 100% there's always an area either side of it that is desktop, leaving me a convenient place to launch the menu.

Something you might be interested in if all you are trying to do is get around the problem of not having a visible desktop from which to launch your menu.

Yeah, I do the same thing actually. I have enough desktop space now that I can afford to have open areas reserved for access to the menu when necessary.
