hi.. i am running red hat 7 on a p60/16m ram... and enjoy using the shell, but would also like to use x... but you can probably already guess that x runs like molasses on this machine... any suggestions?... i've tried gnome and kde... with similar results... is there a way to reduce the size of x when it is loaded?... thanks in advance!

Well ... don't use gnome or kde. Those are desktop environments, not simple windows managers. Try blackbox or icewm alone.
Also, try to use applications based on as few graphic libs as possible, like use only gtk applications and don't mix them with QT based ones (or vice versa but GTK will be faster I think).

Yeah, fvwm2 isn't bad either, if it's included in your distro. Simple, lightweight, but powerful.
