i'm wondering if this is somewhat hazardous... my processor (pentium 200MMx) usage (as indicated by GKRELLM and xcpustate) floats between 40 - 100% and nevers stops to take a break. on my 550MHz it stops from time to time and sits at 0%... then when I do something, it will go to 20-40% and then back down to 0%...

i have eliminated many un-wanted daemons, services, programs...
i'm using blackbox and gkrellm and it still does this...

btw, i'm NOT running SETI or any background math calculators...

I'm constantly at about 3-4% with GENOME@HOME and two Netscape browser open... may be too many daemons running? (I know you said you turn off the daemons you don't need)

Oh I forgot. Mine is P 233 MMX with 64 MB of RAM and 256 MB swap. CPU would shoot up to 80? if I'm using Netscape actively such as downloading pages and stuff but it backed down to about 3% whenever it's done... so yeah yours is a little unusual but I don't know what cause this though...

any commands i can type to maybe give a full output of EVERYTHING that's running?
(not TOP though...)
i can post it here and see if that's the problem...
i just don't want silicon oozing out of the sides of my chip....

To get a listing of all commands currently running:

ps aux | less

What??!! g@h often takes up between 97 and 99.5% of my cpu cycles, on a PIII 800! If it's usin' that small an amount, it can't be working effectively... are you sure that's not memory usage?

I'm fairly certain your cpu won't get injured through normal use. (IE you don't overclock or take out the cooling fans.) I had a celeron 300mhz that I had using 100% of it's capacity 24/7 for several months. I'm giving it to my little sister since I built a faster machine, but the celeron never complained.

I had the same problem with my p166 mmx and after about a month of that i got frustrated and turned it off. It never hurt my computer but just trust me, don't multiboot Windows and Linux

nope
i have been running several pc's for distributed computing (see the sig) at 100% (some overclocked even) for almost 5 months now, a few of the linux boxes have been up at full throttle for at least 1-2 months
if the cooling is adequate, the cpu is happy when it has work to do ;)

First post! :)

Since this a hardware post and not a Linux post I can ACTUALLY contribute! :)

Running your CPU at 100% is not a problem even with overclocking. The two main elements that will harm your processor are excess heat and excess voltage. Never go to far out of specs on voltages and never go above 50 degrees C at full load. If your processor is getting above 50 C then you need a new fan/ heatsink combo. You can get these at www.millisec.com (http://www.millisec.com) or www.2cooltek.com (http://www.2cooltek.com)

Good luck
