Nothing very major...but...it causes me to be discouraged in Mandrake 8.2 already. I'm setting it up, okay - making package selections, etc. And, then, I have to type my root password. That's all good - excpet when I type. It doesn't. This means I cannot create my users, etc. :( It also means that I start my system without a root password. That's pretty horrible.

Now, when I get the installation all done, and reboot - everything works fine. But, I'm not familiar with the groups that my users should belong to, and I definitely don't want root to exist without a password.

Has anybody heard any fixes for this?

P.S. By the way - my keyboard IS being recognized. I know this, because, my mouse it connected into my keyboard, and my mouse works. Strange huh. Oh yeah - I have an HP computer - HP Internet keyboard (with the bluish buttons that light up if you have Windows). Maybe that'll help. Don't know.

Oh - they work...but not during the installation. Only afterwards. And, since the network is setup BEFORE I reboot, it's a little unsafe to leave root open and 'passwordless.'

Yeah - I tested it again. It FINDS my keyboard, but, as soon as it starts into the installation, it's like it doesn't want the keyboard to work, and just stops it.

Hmmm...the nice thing about Linux is that there is always another distro somewhere. (Unless of course, someone knows why this is happening - I would love some help.)

When entering a password, nothing is usually displayed on the screen, making it appear as though the keyboard isn't working when in fact it is.

It's definitely not working. I type ANYTHING and nothing happens. EX: I hit enter, TAB, or the usual Ctrl+3 (to see the installation log) and I can't. All of the above work fine in the 8.1 installation. The computer isn't old at all. Bought it in June or July of this past summer. So...it's not like the drivers would just not be included anymore.

I'm really really puzzled.

New distro version = new bugs.

Report them to Mandrake as I'm sure they want to know about ALL bugs that are found in their new release.

Already did that. Actually - I don't think I would mind so much IF I HADN'T WASTED THREE PERFECTLY GOOD CD'S TO BURN THIS DAMN THING!

Thank you. I needed to get that out. I have learned a valuable lesson, however. Never burn the CD-R's until you have tested it on the CD-RW's. Heed my words fellow Linux'ers.

P.S. By the way - because I am a little angry with Mandrake right now, I am downloading Slackware. And FreeBSD. I'm scared...very very scared...

Ummm.... try a different keyboard?

sounds like you have some strange voodoo keyboard if your mouse passes through your keyboard.

Go buy a cheap $10 one from wal-mart or something. See if that works. If not then there is something else wrong entirely. Maybe the keyboard controller on your mobo is spent.

Actually, it's a pretty kewl keyboard. HP Multimedia something or other. But, it worked with 8.1 - so that's not it. And it works once I actually boot into Linux (after the installation) - it just does not work during the installation.

But, yeah, I think I'm going to borrow my serial keyboard and get everything to work. Ahhh...good ol' serial...
