My modem keeps disconnecting after a while if it has not been active. I need a program that works in the background by sending out signals just to prevent disconnection caused by disactiveness.

Any suggestions?

ping something :)

it will keep sending out data, but I can't assure that that won't drop your connection

Some isp's will disconnect you after a certain amount of continueous online usage. You might want to check to see if they are TRUELY unlimited.

Set your e-mail client to query your mailbox every x minutes (5 or 10).

jdctx is right thought, a lot of ISPs will automatically disconnect you after a certain amount of minutes even on the 'unlimited' packages. For instance, ntl in the UK disconnect you every 2 hours on a dial-up unlimited package. Generally only the ADSL and Cable packages are 'always-on'.
