I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 on my laptop, and I'm pretty happy with the results. It's an Averatec with a Centrino processor. I extracted the ipw2200 firmware to the /lib/firmware directory, and installed network-manager. I can set the wireless settings on the system>administration>networking, but for the life of me I cannot get it to connect wirelessly. The Network Manager applet shows up, but will only show my wired network connection.

From what I understand, the Network Manager applet should also provide wireless settings, but it doesn't. I can't find anything online that would help. I hope it's a simple issue, but it's bugging me to death.

Thanks in advance for any help.

afaik you dont need to install the firmware for the ipw2200, i installed 6.10 on a friends laptop with that chipset and it worked out of the box, installing network manager gave him access to his wpa tkip lan segment, and worked without a hitch

are you sure you replaced your firmware with the proper set? are you sure you didnt set some settings in some other lil gui wizard thingy, and those are overriding network manager?

well, I just removed the firmware files. I then uninstalled the network-manager, and re-installed it. It's still acting in the same way. When I click on it, it only shows a wired network. When I disconnect my ethernet cable, it shows that the connection is disconnected, but there is never any indication or attempt to connect via wireless adapter.

(and yes, i did make sure my wireless card switch on my laptop is on).

is your wireless card properly working though, i think you might have botched the firmware part

check ifconfig, see if you can scan for access points with iwlist ect ect

i think i might have botched something up...my wireless card was earlier showing up as a wireless. Now, this is what shows up:

when i went to etc/network/interfaces, i used to be able to see my wireless settings under eth1. Now I can't.

just letting you know that I re-installed and everything works now.

It was either messing with the firmware, or installing with the wireless switch on off that caused network-manager not to recognize my wireless.

well atleast you got it working, congrats and enjoy

for my two cents it was probably jacking around with the firmware
