That's my workhorse -- 5.0.1 SOHO, which has all the KDE fixins that I don't run very much. I find it an excellent distro, a lot more user-friendly than one would think for a Slackware base. If you can get past the text-only installer it's a good system. I tried out their latest, 5.8, and everything ran well out of the box except for sync'ing my Palm, and the folks with the Vector community helped me out there. Great community. But I'm hanging out until the SOHO version is upgraded to 5.8, and I'll install that.

If you're running Linux for the first time I really recommend something built around Debian (Ubuntu, Mepis, something like that) to get your feet wet on. Vector is a great one to install once you have the Linux basics down. But 5.8 might be a good one to try out as a first flight; with the exception of the installer it's a lot more user- (read: newbie-) friendly than earlier versions.

this is a really bad question to ask, because everyone will respond with their favorite distro, so basically your question gets 100 different answers and you still dont know

the only advice i can offer is pick a best of a breed distro, most distros are just branched off with minimal differences from one of the main distros

the real difference is package managment, but other than that, linux is linux

so for rpm==redhat, deb==debian, slackpack==slack, meta-source == gentoo

flip a coin and pick one stick with it

yea, well linux is linux, just use it if you encounter a problem, then fix it
reinstalling or distro hopping doesnt solve anything, the point main being

True, that. I think most of us distro-hop 'cause WE CAN. I keep a spare partition on the hard drive for such experiments, but have kept the same workhorse for more than a year.
