having installed definite linux on an old pc i've had sitting around, i thought it might be fun to install apache and set up a web server. no chance! the pure lack of information available to a linux nubie is astonishing. all the documentation i've found is aimed at people with linux experience and after two weeks of trauling thro websites and forums all i've discovered is that u can't be a proper linux user till u've built your own kernal. great! give me windows anyday...

After installing Redhat, I felt similar. I could not get my modem to work, nor could I get the soundcard configured properly, even after buying several books and looking up info on the internet.
But after researching the different distributions, I tried Mandrake. The install wasn't quite as nice as Redhat, but I got connected to the internet on the first try, my sound card is working well, and the manual is well written.
There are a lot of discussion groups that can probably help. I wonder if it was a lack of information, or a lack of determination that discouraged you. Stick with windows if you enjoy the b.s.o.d.'s, constant internet hang ups, high prices, etc.

definately not lack of determination, tho i agree about the forums. i've learnt alot over the last week or so. trouble i found was that i didn't really know what questions to ask hence it has been very frustrating. the only hangups with the internet have been from BT with my adsl line. as for bsod, haven't seen one of those since i installed win2000 server 8 months ago. ur right about the cost tho http://discussions.linuxplanet.com/frown.gif
btw, i still believe the resources available for someone with no linux eperience are very few & far between. Iam new to all this and i don't personally know anyone who uses linux so if u know any good sites for peeps like me, let me know!

It isnt true that new users to Linux dont have access to resources.Try www.linudoc.org (http://www.linudoc.org) for starters.Use www.google.com (http://www.google.com) to search for resources.I'm sure u'll find lots.
One more important thing.Dont lose hope.Keep expermenting and u'll learn a lot. http://discussions.linuxplanet.com/biggrin.gif
