Hola!
I had a friend of mine install Linux on my machine a few weeks ago, and I've been sort of delving into the depths. I just now got really into Linux because I found my (friend's) Linux book, so I can now do stuff besides change the wallpaper.

One of the things I want to know is, how is the Linux Seti@Home client compared to the Win32 client? I run S@H command line version in Win98 on my Athlon Ghz w/ 256mb ram, and avg about 6:30 per Work Unit. Is Linux muxh faster? I've heard from a person that it is actually slower!

Another thing: in the Windows Explorer type thing (I have yet to learn all these fancy TLAs), it recognizes my scroll wheel, but in Netscape I still have to manually scroll. Is this a problem with Netscape? I downloaded Mozilla, I'll install that tomorrow, see if that makes a difference.

Also, my friend downloaded and installed DRI so I could play Descent3 and Quake3 in Linux, but for some reason it would only run in software mode @ ~2fps. I dont know if he asked anything pertaining to that here or not.

Also, will old DOS mode games like Descent (1 or 2) or Warcraft 2 run under Linux? I'm guessing they won't, but I just want to make sure.

I also have a lot of little questions that I'll ask at random intervals, so be on the lookout!

1) Linux might be a little slower because the only fortran compiler available for linux is as old as dirt. I'm hoping someone re-does it. I may do it myself one day...I just have to learn some fortran :). The speed difference is negligible though, and you can run the process in the background. That means that you can open up a terminal window, type some stuff, and seti@home will be running on your computer but you wouldn't be able to tell. It's totally seamless...uploads and downloads WU's on its own. No clunky graphic to waste your memory. My advice to you: Check out the link in my sig (it's probably not what you think...unless you're really weird). There are a whole lot of Distributed Computing projects going on in the name of LNO. Choose whichever one floats your boat and run that one.
The Windows Explorer type thing's name is different depending on what you're using. It's all the XFree86 windowing system. If you're using Gnome 1.4, it's either GMC or Nautilus. If you're using KDE, it's Konqueror. Netscape does have some problems with recognizing the scroll. My advice: if it's not already installed, install imwheel (you can see whether or not it's installed by typing "top" at the console. If there's an "imwheel" process running, then it's installed). Imwheel can be downloaded from http://freshmeat.net/ (do a search for imwheel). Once it's installed and working, download the latest and greatest .imwheelrc file (available via imwheel's homepage, which is linked to off of freshmeat) and copy it into your /home/user directory. I THINK that takes care of the Netscape problem.
Q3/D3: *shrug* Sorry...no idea :(
Descent and War2 should be runnable so long as they're installed on a windows partition. They're runnable with the program wine available at http://www.winehq.com/ . http://www.linuxdoc.org/ probably has some howto's on how to use wine. I believe that there's even a howto on how to use wine without windows on your machine.
Good luck and enjoy linux :)

I'm Scorch's friend in RL and I've been helping him out with linux. Just to let you know, he's using Mandrake 7.2, KDE (so he's got konqurer).

Believe me...I've asked about the DRI stuff ;)

I don't believe Descent 1/2 or warcraft will work with Wine...because their DOS programs and not Windows programs. You might want to look into a DOS emmulator.

imwheel is also automaticly set up in mandrake (I know, I helped with the install ;) )

Hi

I used this tip: http://forums.msn.zdnet.com/group/zd.Linux/msn/msn.tpt/@thread@10293@F@1@D-,D@ALL/@article@mark@10293?EXP=ALL&VWM=&ROS=1&OC=75 to enable the scrollwheel in SuSE 7.1, although it didn't work in Caldera 2.4. You are not saying what distro you are running, but I guess it shouldn't hurt to try... ;)

Theres a NHF on getting the MS intellimouse explorer working in linux...that should work with almost any mouse you have, at least the part about the scroll wheel. Check it out.
