RAVE!! :D
Well, I have been learning how to create my own DVD's on Linux. I still can't get KMediaFactory to install... but that is another story. SO I started digging and found that the French have a program called ManDVD. (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=38347) And this app BLOWS KMediaFactory OUT of the water! Far more options and doesn't bleed all my memory and swap in the process. So I have been having a blast with this new app (new to me), but one minor issue is you can only add one audio file to a slide show.

Sooooo I started to dig around and found Audacity and within 15 minutes of playing, figured out how to mix my own sound tracks! So I am now taking existing MP3's and other audio files and mixing my own. An example is The Drowning Pool Bodies and The Crystal Method Over the Line, I have mixed these two into a single continuous MP3, and even blended the ending of Bodies and the start of Over the Line. Now for some of you this is no big deal but since I have never done this before (although I have wanted too...) I am really proud that I was able to do it without even reading up on it!

That speaks volumes to the developers of both applications. Kudos on writing applications that not only WORK! But are easy enough that someone that is NOT fluent in them is able to figure them out and use them with very little effort.

RANT!!!
Wireless... yes I know it's the hardware manufactures that are making it difficult. BUT I have a wireless card that many others have succeeded in getting up and working with Linux. I haven't been able to in 9 months of trying. Is it critical that I get it working? No, good thing too, otherwise I would pretty much not need Linux on my laptop, well I wouldn't bother installing it if all I could do was plug into a wired internet connection.

Why do I want wireless? Gee Wally easy one! I work at the UCSC and there are several cool coffee shops I wouldn't mind going to to relax over a cup-o-joe while I am working on a report or researching solar power equipment. BUT since I can't connect to the internet via wireless (and wired connections are not available...) can't enjoy that leisure.

Anyhow, I know both my wireless router and WI-NIC work, I installed Win2K on a spare hard drive for my laptop and within 3 hours of starting the install was up and surfing via the wireless. So the hardware works. I have tried wlassiant, Network Manager, command line, run ndiswrapper till I am sick of it... and still no wireless with Linux. I really do not want to and nor do I have the $$$ to go buy yet another WI-NIC in the hopes that is may work. So I have yet again given up on Linux being able to do what Windows does easier and more reliably... connect to wireless.

Just for those that made it this far into the RANT, system specs:
Toshiba A15-S129
Linksys WPC54G ver. 3

Since there already are working instances of the wireless card in linux, I can't understand why you cannot reproduce the effort put into making it work. now that I have some time, I'll try looking out.

EDIT: forgot to ask: does wlan0 show up? Or should i ask if the problem's with installing drivers or using iwconfig?

[B]I have no idea what it all means... and I have been trying all sorts of things. I just tried using the Linuxant Driver Loader and this is the output from that. I have searched for the latest driver as well. Looks like I will have to suck it up and buy a new Wi-NIC...

The BCM43XX module sucks. Instead get the windows drivers and use ndiswrapper. You'll get better results using the wrapper than you will using the bcm43xx module.

NO! the MEPIS forums simply say that the error IS bcm43xx! you NEED to BLACKLIST it!

I think thats precisely the problem.

OR, You could solve those error messages
heres the main error message:
bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.

You're getting that because you dont have the firmware files in /lib/firmware.
Do some googling for fwcutter and bcm43xx firmware...theres a site out there for it, but i dont have the time at the moment to find it

wow, I just took a look at ManDVD and the GUI is fantastic!
I also checked out ManSLIDES which only uses pictures right now but is apparently the beginning of what ManDVD is going to look like using QT4. Looks great! A lot of GUI developers can learn something from this project.

If all applications start looking this good, I might have to switch to KDE :o ;)

looks to me like you just need to install the broadcom firmware, unless softmac support is missing in your kernel, then you need to recompile make sure its there to load the firmware

A lot of Linux developers could take a lesson. ALTHOUGH, there are some minor issues with it. I haven't been able to find a preferences setting where I can set my DVD to NTSC instead of PAL. But otherwise, excellent program. I just finished creating a kick @ss DVD for my sister! And it was EASY!!! EASY!!! Like ALL software should be.

While my "good" computer is in the shop, I'm left with a ten year old Gateway 2000 computer that I got at a yard sale for twenty bucks, and I can still transcode avis and burn DVDs at the command line according to this tutorial:

http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142299&highlight=avi

You gotta be impressed. No way could I do this with the Windows app I used to use. I wouldn't even want to try Windows XP on this old box.

I mean that you must blacklist the bcm43xx module before loading the windows drivers to be able to use it (make sure bcm43xx doesn't get loaded at all).

And did you check if the windows drivers you use are the supported versions? Different versions than what are supported can be the problem!

Black list the driver that is. I haven't had to mess with system cofigs or anything else for a good couple of years.

you using udev? There is now a new blacklist option in modprobe.conf to be used. but you will need your distro's way of updating modprobe.conf. Arch, Slackware, debian and gentoo have different methods for that and I suppose its very distro specific. But, I believe all distros have something like modules-update or update-modules for that.

And secondly, coldplug/hotplug must be stopped.

Furthermore.... (oh... just forgot it. Can't remember now. I'll append if I do remember later)

Anyway, you can just recompile the bcm43xx out of the kernel.

I haven't been able to find a preferences setting where I can set my DVD to NTSC instead of PAL.

so all your dvds are created in PAL format?? or do you use some other program to later on convert them to NTSC??

MkIII_Supra

unless I forget to set it to NTSC. Which has happened several times now. But now it's not that big of a deal. I have a new Athlon XP 64 3800+ dual core CPU on a new ASUS motherboard with 2GB of DDR 800MHz RAM and dual SATA drives.

My old AMD Duron 1.2GHz would crawl trying to process a DVD, this new system hauls fanny. It takes about 45 minutes start to finish to process 135 1024x768 jpgs and 25 minutes of mp3 music into a slideshow. Used to take just over 30 hours on my old Duron. So that was a pain if I forgot to set the format to NTSC. As far as I can tell, you can't change the format once you save it.

As for the wireless issues, still haven't resolved them. I have done all that I have been instructed to do. Recompiling the kernel, etc... (had to break out the old notes for that! It's been over 3 years since I compiled a kernel!) and of course in famous SuSE fashion as soon as I tried to boot to the new kernel... it paniced. For some odd reason I have never been able to successfully compile a custom kernel under SuSE but have done so many times on Mandrake (before they became Mandriva) Slackware once and just last week, Kubuntu.

I have just come to accept that this system will never be wireless under Linux. And that is fine for now. When the time comes and I have the money... well later.

Ugh, Broadcom wireless NICs... Yeah, got one of those in my laptop which, coincidentally was the first I set up under Linux. Tons of people have problems with Broadcom wireless nics. It doesn't help that most walkthroughs told a different story on how to get it working (at least under WPA, Ubuntu 6.10 detected and set it up fine right off the bat for WEP)

A couple of people were comparing these NICs to the new millenium's answer to winmodems hehe

For WPA PSK-TKIP, I was able to get it up finally with ndiswrapper, network manager and wpasupplicant. Works flawlessly on my home wireless network but the Cisco Access Points at work drop me after 30 seconds due to lost packets.

the easiest answer on bad wireless chipsets is dont support binary blobs, done use the junk chipsets when possible and opt for more opensource friendly providers that have much better drivers, example atheros and possibly ralink

unless I forget to set it to NTSC.Didn't you say this app comes from France? I thnk PAL is the default in Europe, so I don't fault the developers for making that choice.

I've been using DVD styler for my DVD creation, It's a blast to use and can output either an iso, or can burn the disk directly.

Yes, it is. Life would be a lot easier if we had the same standard on both sides of the pond.

I already have for the most part switched to the metric system. It make so much more sense and once you learn it, it's easy!

I don't fault the developer for defaulting to what is native for him, but I do fault him for not providing a method for a user to change the default. After all it's a global world, just not unified yet.

As for the PAL / NTSC nightmare, I think it's just one more PITA that we have to endure... well actually if we as a collective spoke out against Region codes and formats then life would be so much F***ing easier. But no, bureaucrats and corporations have to make our lives difficult so they can justify their existence. Such is life eh!?

We have a mess when it comes to metric and imperial.
We officially use the metric system but in reality its a mix of both systems!
On our licences we have our heights in centimetres but if someone asks me how tall I am and I answer 185cm, people get confused. I blame sports for the height thing though. Every athlete's height is given in feet and inches. Temperatures are even worse. When we talk about weather, almost everyone(there are some that still hold on to Fahrenheit for some reason) say it in Celsius. However, when people talk about the temperature in the water(lake or pool), or the temperature in the house, they use Fahrenheit! Also when talking about cooking. It's an annoying mess.

Well since I moved from OpenSuSE to PCLinuxOS my wireless card works with nDiswrapper just fine. Took me 5 minutes total to set up and connect to a wireless point. The problem was not with the hardware. No it has to be with the SuSE distribution.

Since I have moved all my systems to PCLinuxOS I have been experiencing phenomenal performance improvements as well as 100% Beryl capability. Even on my old AMD Duron 1.2GHz PC, I can use the 3D desktop with no major performance hits. ALL of my hardware works with little (wireless card) effort or none at all (printer, scanner, web-cam...). What I find so ironic about the whole thing is that all distributions are based off of the same kernels and I use KDE and yet they all will perform / interact with hardware totally different. Even the nVidia drivers with PCLinuxOS will be reinstalled with no interaction by me. OpenSuSE I had to manually run the nVidia driver... after of course X crashed! I have a whole story on that for a later time as well.

I was so surprised at the fact that I was finally, after over a year of effort, able to connect to a wireless connection with my laptop, that I went out every night for a week to various hot spots JUST so I could use my wireless card! And it's the one that several have said I should replace... but it works with PCLinuxOS.

As for PCLinuxOS, I have my gripes about it, but that is for another post. I will say that overall though, the gripes I have are not enough to make me want to try yet another distribution.

Peace.
