I want to try debian. I have already done that so please let me rephrase that. I would like to try debian in a way so GNOME is set up.

I have installed it before, with no problems until it doesn't detect my video card. I install a new version of XFree86 and debian stops working.

I am willing to try the install again if someone can tell me how I can get X working.

If noone wants to tell me, I'm fine with other distros either way, they all are better than Micr*$oft Win**** after all. So please don't feel obligated to answer. Thank you anyways if you don't help since I have already been able to get linux up and running (and resolved lots of problems) with the help of the very kind people at the Message Board.

THANK YOU

1) Move this to General Questions.

2) You want to run 'Testing' (woody) or 'Unstable' (sid) in order to use the latest version of X and therefore be able to use the Nvidia drivers. I run woody with Nvidia and it works great.

Debian provides the nvidia drivers as part of their packaging system.

I would wait till I had a working X windows setup before installing the nvidia drivers.

You could try Progeny Debian. It is better equipped to install newer hardware during the initial install.

I use debian-testing with nvidia and it works great.

Good Luck,

Libranet Debian installs very well with Nvidia and a wheel mouse. Try it, as it also uses a 2.4 kernel and Rieser if you want.

The next version is coming out in early Jan 2002 with up to date drivers.

LibraNet is great. I installed it this weekend and I have a nVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 64MB card. No troubles all. Up an running in about twenty minutes. The only problem I have has is monitor based. I have to run at 16bit becuase my monitor can't handle 24 at 1024x768, but that makes little difference to me becuse I can hardly tell the difference. As well as being based on Debian and having some of it's fantastic tools there is the added bonus of adminmenu which is a very nice tool. IF you have difficulty with Debian give LibraNet a try.

Just my shameless promoting 2 cents!

Yeah, Sarah31's right. I reloaded all my OS's this weekend, including Libranet (I had to- it was on the same drive as Windows and I re-partitioned.) I had Libranet up and running with an internet connection in less than an hour- I STILL can't connect with Windows, but it doesn't matter- I'm not even gonna try anymore!!

Glad I could help out a fellow (Libranet) Debian user.
