Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Using Linux with RoadRunner Cable Modem
Anyone got any pointers, links, instructions, etc. for me? I don't have linux on my box at the moment, but would like to have it soon. I've got roadrunner and that's gonna stay that way until something better comes along. I know they won't "officially" support it. Hell, from what I've heard they won't support you unless you've got IE running on your box. Whatever; I'm pretty sure it's all DHCP, so I think it should be comparatively easy, but I lack the experience required to really know what to do. I don't have any info on a specific distro, because I haven't actually gotten that far.
Thanks for any help.

Right now I'm using a Linksys Router to share my modem between my iMac and my Linux box. I did use Linux with RR only before I got my Mac. It's very easy to setup just make sure when you install Linux its looks for a local LAN connection to the net. Besides with all the setup tools they have for using up stuff like that you won't have a hard time at all.
P.S: Do you have a USB Cable Modem?

Yup, it's DHCP, I use the utility pump to get and keep my lease. Here, (Atlanta) you must phone in your eth card mac address, as well as the modem's mac addy, if you change eth cards, it won't connect. I use pump -i eth0 to get the lease, very simple.

Assuming the policies are the same in Rochester as they are in Corning (which is probably the case, as it's only 1.5 hours away), it's as easy as plugging everything in and running dhcpcd (provided, of course, yournetwork card is configured). I didn't have to phone anything in, and a new network card only involved unplugging the cable modem's power for a minute before I plugged it into the card. There's really nothing to it.
