How difficult is this to do?
Just something basic will suffice, probably. I think the Ubuntu server has LAMP.
or could I just run it from installing apache on this desktop version?
If it isnt too hard to setup a domain and whatnot w/ a dynamic IP, this is definitely something I would be interested in doing.
assuming also that my broadband provider wouldnt be TOO pissed
Hm...this idea is very interesting.
Is anyone here running a website off of a similar setup?

It isn't very difficult and as you say if your ISP allows webservers. Many do not allow servers and block port 80.
You can get a free dynamic DNS account and noip.com or dydns.com. It allows you to have a URL that allows points to your current IP address even when it changes.
Do not expect to be able to serve many clients at once. The typical basic broadband service upload speed is typically half the download speed.

hmm. is there a way to check if i can get away with having a webserver?
and you're right, i think upload speed is like a FOURTH of the download speed. according to internet "speed tests", anyway.

Your ISP agreement would have the particulars or just try it and see. What broadband service are you using?

Time Warner Cable RoadRunner (www.rr.com)
would it be better to just install the server edition, or setup apache on this desktop version, to try it out?

I currently have RR through Time Warner and serve websites from my home. The sites aren't anything major just one personal one and one personal business. I signed up for an account at zoneedit.com for the DNS updating to my IP. I didn't like the fact that dyndns made you pay to use your own URL as opposed to something like anything.dnydns.org for your site. And I'm an currently using OS X to serve the pages, but previously I used Ubuntu PPC edition.

Does not matter what distribution / version you use to try it out.

sweet. good news. I'll read more about it and hopefully be trying it out sometime soon.
I'm not making any major site or anything, probably just something personal.
Know of any good how-to's to go by?

Here are two links I found that may be of help.
LAMP Installation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP) and General Server Docs (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Servers)
The Ubuntu website can be very helpful and also take a look at http://www.ubuntuforums.org for community based help that is specific to Ubuntu. HTH. :)

I'm not sure what state you're in, but I used to be a RR customer for 3 years living in NJ. I got in good with a cable modem technician that told me that, yes, RR does use DHCP but that their lease times are 6 months AND just as long as your device's MAC never changed, it will always have the same IP address.
Going from that, I decided to put up my webserver and, for those 3 years, always had the same IP address.
Just my $.02 cents...

Honestly though, I LOVE this site. I've been on here for a while, just never really posted all that much until recently. The community is very much alive and helpful.
At ubuntuforums...They haven't been very much help. although I havent been on there as long. They do have a very good knowledgebase, though.
