For the life of me I cant get this installed correctly. I followed all the directions on the sun site to a T and cant get my runtime machine working correctly.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am using mandrake 7.2

I don't follow you. StarOffice does not include JAVA, it merely will find a properly installed JDK1.1.8 and use it if present, but it does not install it (and note that StarOffice 5.2 will only work and recognize JDK1.1.8).

I also don't know what Usulsuspct means by the virtual machine "doesn't work". A few more details would help

All I did was go to www.blackdown.org (http://www.blackdown.org) get JDK 1.1.8, gunzip and untar it. Then place the folder where you want it (I put it in /usr/local/bin), then chgrp so that desired users have group access, then chmod so the group has executable permissions. Then just point any foo.jar files to the binaries, and it should work.

Usualsuspct...what have you tried so far? How did you install it (.tar.gz or .rpm)? What error messages has it given you? Does it install and you can't get your machine to recognize it or does the install crap out on you? A little more info would help please

I downloade the JRE from Sun, when it prompted me to install the plugin. I followed the instructions to install the binary I downloaded.

I followed the intructions to install the binary...and then went into the Konqueror settings and set the path for where I downloaded the JRE to.

Everytime I try and access a page that requires the java2 enviornment I get redirected to Sun's page telling me I need to download the plugin. On a side note, it doesn work in Netscape either. I would prefer to use Konqueror however, because I am on a slower machine and this runs faster for me.

Thanks for the ideas...

If you are looking for a browser plug-in, again I would suggest checking the www.blackdown.org (http://www.blackdown.org) site. I don't know about Konqueror , but their plugins work fine for me with NetScape (never actually tried Sun's stuff for JAVA, just blackdown's).
