whichever one your company is paying you to get, or a job requires

getting certs as a means to get a job really doesnt work too well, in fact if you dont have any experience to back up a cert most employers will over look you on that basis alone

an internship is worth much more towards employment than a cert when starting out, certs a great as you gain experience especially since they make you "more skilled" and as skill level goes up with certifications (and experience) so does pay scale

so get a starter job, or an internship and go from there

I second that motion entirely, also I would recommend that if you are ken to learn an internship is much more profitable for you, then when you finally do a certification, it is a case of honing those skills more than craming and learning...

the lpic is affordable and tests are offered in numerous locations. It's the certfication that I'd like to get someday, for purely personal reasons. Whether it would be of any more practical use than my BA in English, I cannot say for certain.

I hear that the LPI certifications are really liked by employers in Europe and Japan and possibly other places. Not so much in North America though....at least not yet. I also heard that the Linux+ certification is nothing more than an A+ exam with some linux questions. The RHCE is quite expensive from what I hear too.

So to sum it all up. If you're in Europe, you may want to get the LPI. If you're in North America, hold off on the certifications unless you need them for a particular job. Like the above posters said, an internship will probably be the best thing you can get. Im hoping to get one in spring my self :D

take them all, if your can get someone else to pay for them

I have RHCT and lpic and comptia linux+....they basically all cover the same material so if you are studying for one, you are kindof studying for them all.

I'd stay away from vendor specific unless your current employer wants it.

Having these did not get me a job, but if I had only had a RH cert, then my new employer would care even less as they are trying to get rid of what little RH is left here.

crow2icedearth:

My company is hiring like mad, not sure about interns though...

check out http://www.akamai.com/html/careers/current_openings_cambridge.html

At least check that link for the job descriptions. Maybe they say what qualifications/cert's they (we) are looking for.
