Skype was a breeze to install under Kubuntu, but my mic wasn't working. I opened Audacity to verify that the mic works at all, which it did, but still no luck in Skype. Here is what I found: (This is KDE-specific, sorry)
Use kmix to select mic as the input, and set the capture volume as high as needed.
In the KDE Sound System Settings, enable full duplex sound for alsa.
(While you're in there. it doesn't hurt to turn the auto-suspend idle timer down to 2-3 seconds)
In Skype, go into the sound devices option set and select alsa as the sound device. Mine had defaulted to oss.
That's it! Skype now works, and I have one less reason to need M$.
(If you use gnome or xfce, I assume there's a comparable sound setup utility, and the above settings should be easily set)
Good luck, and happy skyping!
