Okay, after much researching and hair pulling, I felt I must share the resolution to my problem in the hopes it will contribute.
I did a new install of Debian Etch (testing) and, as is my habit, did a very minimal install. Normally this has in recent years not produced any problems with hardware discovery but this time it did with my sound. The normal resolutions of run alsaconf and adjust sound volumes were NOT the issue.
I, fortuitously, stumbled on the following site http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2006/10/steps-to-get-audio-to-work-in-debian.html which resolved the issue.
Evidently, libesd-alsa0 as well as alsa-base and alsa-utils need to be installed when doing a minimual install.
I hope this helps someone!
