is this possible. I have an old desktop I would like to leave in my office but keep it discrete without a giant monitor. Is this possible?? Thanks in advance for any help. My apologies if this is not the correct forum for this question.

yes, its possible, you have some choices on how to do it, but i would suggest setting up freenx on the desktop as i assume you mean "run linux" as in having a gui, otherwise just use putty or some other ssh client from the windows laptop and keep the desktop headless

Look into something called UltraVNC (google it) this would allow you to run the LINUX GUI from any other machine with IP conncetivity. Has had some security issues in the past but I havent looked in a while, could be secure now with current version.

VNC or export your X session over ssh, or use a bootable cd and vmware and query the remote X stuff or....

By keeping this discreet, I'm assuming you mean, no repartitioning or stuff like that. If that's the case, I'd look at the free VMWare server.
