massive CPU usage

Mandrake 8.0 seems to hog the CPU more than any distro ive used. Just opening Moxzilla or Xterm will take up 100%. Then when the comp is idle, the CpU hangs around 45%-50%. Is their a way i can keep the cpu usage down?

When I use GNOME I notice that if I just start gnome and leave it, the CPU is low. If I run any program, and close it, the CPU stays low..

HOWEVER, if I start up nautilus to browse a few files, even when I close it the CPU stays up at near 100% forever.. Until I log out..

I gave up using GNOME and nautilus.
