As most of you know, the Mozilla Foundation will not allow the Debian project to use the Firefox name or logo.
The proposed name that I see most often of the "Debianized" Firefox browser is "IceWeasel." I can imagine some Debian user possibly being embarrassed when asked what browser she or he uses:
User of Another Distribution: What Web browser are you using with Debian 4.0?
Debian User: Err.... Um.... Well, it's called "IceWeasel," but it is really Firefox.
User of Another Distribution: Seriously, what browser are you using?
Debian User: I told you!
User of Another Distribution: Stop kidding! Why won't you tell me?
In the spirit of fun and play, and to get your opinions, I am conducting a poll. I thought of the name "IceWeasel," have looked at several proposed icons for Debian and Ubuntu, and realize that the white weasel looks like an ermine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoat). (In fact, an ermine is a weasel that turns white in winter for camouflage.)
If you could name the browser, which name would you choose, "IceWeasel" or "Ermine"? :)
If "Ermine" wins this poll, I will try to find (again) the name of the Debian developer in charge of the browser project and suggest "Ermine" to him or her.
Thank you very much, in advance, for your time and feedback!
Cordially,
David
P.S. -- I don't want to delve into the zoological implications of the "Ermine" browser name. Ermines turn white in winter, as I state, for protective camouflage. Would that mean you could use the browser only during the winter of your respective hemisphere? Obviously, going to this extreme is utterly absurd! :D

I just wanted to make sure no one got misinformed by this comment. A much more accurate statement would be "As most of you know, the Mozilla Foundation will not allow the Debian project to use the Firefox name WITHOUT the logo." Its not like Mozilla hates Debian.
But since "Pointless Fork" isn't an option, I'm going to go with Ice Weasel.

I think Ice Hound has a better ring to it then Ice Weasel. Or perhaps it's just because my favorite pub is "The Fox & Hound"....

I'm going with Gentoo, they don't care about the bickering between mice and men...they have their own problems :D

I can tell that "Ermine" will lose the poll, but I created the poll for fun, anyway.
I am sure that "IceWeasel" is here to stay, and maybe we'll get used to it! :D

Hi, voidinit.I think Ice Hound has a better ring to it then Ice Weasel. Or perhaps it's just because my favorite pub is "The Fox & Hound"....It's been ten years since I was in an English pub! There's nothing quite like it. (I really enjoyed my three-week stay in the UK.) :)
"Hound" sounds better that "Weasel," but I know that the matter has been decided.
Thanks.

Hello, Icarus.I'm going with Gentoo, they don't care about the bickering between mice and men...they have their own problems :DI have read quite a bit about Gentoo and I have a broadband (cable modem) Internet connection.
Although I have been using Linux for four years, I suspect I lack the expertise to install and configure Gentoo, although I think it is a great distribution.
Thank you.

David

I think the ermine should be used, it's got great presence, and to make the hemispheres happy, run a cron job, so he/she could change with the seasons.

It's not for the faint of heart, impatiant or those with slower machines :D
There's always Suse :p

I like it! :D

Hello, Icarus. It's [Gentoo] not for the faint of heart, impatiant or those with slower machines :D
There's always Suse :pActually, I have been running SuSE Linux since I first started using Linux four years ago. It is the only distribution that I have used constantly! :D
I do not think that I am "faint of heart," Icarus, or I probably never would have tried Linux. (I did much research before deciding on SuSE Linux Professional; SuSE was the leading distribution in Europe, but not popular in the United States like it is now.)
I am certainly patient and willing to read documentation carefully.
I am not sure, however, if my machine is considered "slower." The computer I plan to use as my Linux workstation/tower has a 2.0-GHz Pentium-4 processor (without hyperthreading) and 1-MB of RAM with two ATA hard drives. I have also taken great care to make certain that the case is very well ventilated.
Early this year, I bought a used Dell Dimension 8300 tower with a 3.0-GHz Pentium-4 processor (with hyperthreading), 1-GB of RAM, and a 120-GB SATA hard drive. I have replaced all of the proprietary hardware in order to make the computer "Linux ready." The main problem I have with the Dell, aside from its total lack of aesthetic appeal, is the inadequate cooling of the case, and no way for me to increase the air flow. The only thing I was able to do was to install one of those small fans in one of the PCI slots, and the fan is too wide to place it beside the AGP video card, as I had wished.
My plan has been to make this machine a "Windows box." I have Windows XP Professional installed now on the above-mentioned 2.0-GHz machine (a dual-boot setup) and I was going to put WinXP Pro on the Dell (and call Microsoft to activate it). Ironically, one of my favorite on-line Linux retailers has some sort of alliance with Microsoft and is sending me the most expensive version of Vista with a free license. (I did some writing for his Web site to promote his Linux distributions and traning discs, and he sent me many Linux training discs and told me that he would send me Vista.)
I am pretty much trying to wean myself off of Microsoft, but I verified with Dell that the Dimension 8300 is "Vista ready." I would, however, love to run Linux on a faster machine, but I love the case for the 2.0-GHz system (a system that I built myself) and the Dell's case is terrible. (Plus, there is the issue of SATA support not being universal yet for Linux distros.)
I wish that I could afford to rebuild the 2.0-GHz system again, but the best I am able to do is install two new 120-GB Seagate ATA drives and to upgrade the video card to a 4X AGP 3-D 128-MB card (replacing a 2-D 32-MB Matrox G450 Millennium card).
Basically, I'd like to run Linux on the fastest machine possible, but the Dell has a horrible case (in terms of air flow); I know the hardware in the other computer works with Linux (at least with SuSE); and -- on the light side -- I don't want to force Linux to run inside the ugly Dell case. :p (I have no idea if I could transplant the insides of the Dimension 8300 into another case; even the power supply is part of the motherboard! Also, the Dell case does not have as many bays as my Enlight (http://www.enlightcorp.com/) case, for the 2.0-GHz system.) :(
I will check the Gentoo Web site to see what the minimum hardware requirements are, just out of curiosity. Incidentally, what is your hardware setup for Gentoo, Icarus?
I have a special interest in, and admiration for, Gentoo and Debian, Icarus, with different reasons for each distro.
Well, I am completely off-topic in a thread that I started, so I will stop rambling now. I appreciate your patience.
Thank you, Icarus! :D
Cordially,
David
P.S. -- By the way, I think that Gentoo has a cool logo.
