I just hooked up my dsl. now i really dont need windows anymore. before i get carried away, i have 2 urgent questions.
i can only do adsl start as root. how do i make sure im not on the net as root?
When i click the internet icon in drake 8.1, i get "need root password to run net monitor"
i dont want to be logged in as root on the net.

i have roaring penguin, but cant start except as root, and when i try to use drake 8.1, to set up the dsl connection, it also asks for root.
how do i fix this??
logging off now
thanx

Milan lets not get scary here... Linux ask for you root password when making a change to the system, because it wants to make sure the admin is making the change. So even though you setup your ADSL with Drake Config and it ask for your root password don't mind that. If you want to stay safe then just don't login and use your computer as root. Stay under your normal user login name.

What is this "Roaring Penguin" program and how did you got about install it? RPM or tar.gz? I figure you can set some user rights on the program so you can run it as a normal user. So please reply back to this post with some more info so I can help you with that. Also if you have any more questions about the root/admin stuff please let me know too. Besides that welcome to the Linux commuinty. :)

i don't know if starbuck already answered you , don't have a lot of time now..
that button is to modify your internet connection (it's one of the parts of the mandrake control center, where you told it that you use dsl). if you would've run it just once, you would've know you don't need to hit that button. the internet is already started from the beginning (which is one of the messages it prints out and puts an [ OK ] or [ FAILED ] or a [ PASSED ] near it. you need to start an internet browser. go to the menubar -> networking -> www and then click on of the browsers (opera, netscape, konqueror, galeon,...) you should be ashamed to ask this, my mom asked me the same thing ("what's the password i have to type?" - when i explained it to her, she asked why it didn't had the same buttons as windows :rolleyes :) ;)

edit: never heard of roaring penguin, my post above is about that "internet" icon on your desktop..

Thanks starbucks
plse forgive my questions as iam a newbie. i couldnt fix linux even if i tried. thats why iam nervous about doin stuff as root.
i got the idea of roaring penguin from google.its .rpm file and it pretty much installed itself.
when i start konqueror i always get a connection failed message so i have to type adsl start. it always asks for root. i tried changing permissions but it doesnt seem to work.

then i figured id use manddrake,, again after reading from google and this site. it sets up fine but in order to start, it always says "in order to run net monitor, please enter root password."

I didnt select start connection at boot because i dont want to be connected all the time

how do i make sure iam not connected as root?

thanx for the help.

Milan all you have to do is not login as root then you'll be okay. If you don't want to be on the net at all times you can always stop it.

The Net Monitor icon is a little misleading, because it is labelled "Internet", although it has nothing to do with connecting to the Net at all. That occurs at bootup, as Lodootje said. If you see a line in your startup messages that says: "Bringng up eth0- O.K.", then your card is basically configured and running.
To configure your Internet connection, you can use Netconf. You only need to use the Roaring Penguin client if your ISP uses PPPoE (the PPP protocol running over Ethernet). I don't use it myself, so I can't help with the configuration, but I know there's plenty of info on RP out there.

Once your card and network information are set correctly, you just need to fire up a browser to get on the Web.

So, the neccessary steps are these:
- First get your ethernet card configured.
- Enter the networking info supplied by your ISP (your IP, DNS servers, Gateway IP, etc.).
- If necessary, configure the PPPoE client.
Most of this requires you to be root. Start with the card configuration first, and work your way up. Post here with questions if you have any.

there's really nobody one this message who can type my name :DSorry...the name is a little odd to me, and doesn't exactly roll off the tips of my fingers.
Maybe you could provide a mnemonic for the "Ludootje" instruction call for those of us who are slightly brain-dead.
:D

Happy New Year!
