Again, just installed Mandrake 7.2 for first time on it's own hardrive. Thanks to you guys, I am past the (localhost) screen now, after typing in "startx"...also "xinit" worked. However, in this process, it ends with errors. It says: (WW) I810: No matching device section for instance (Bus ID PCI: 0:1:0) not found. (next line is): (EE) No devices detected. (next line is): Fatal server error: (last line is): no screens found. ...........Ok, perhaps I should mention that I have a 366 mhz celeron. Is this not compatible? Also, I have a Voodoo3-2000 video card onboard, and a network card onboard, and during installation, I opted not to setup either the network, my DSL, or the modem, thinking I would set them up later. Any ideas?

Have you run xf86config?

No I haven't. Should I? What is it?

It looks like it's trying to load the i810 video chipset, which is not the right one if you have a voodoo3.
I'll walk you through the video setup as much as i can from memory. This part can be complicated, but I'll help out as much as I can. Type 'XF86Setup' (note the upper and lower case). This will start the X setup program. You may or may not have the mouse setup yet. If you can move the mouse around, select video card setup.
If the mouse is not setup yet, use the arrow keys or press tab to move to the desired field. Select mouse, read the info that pops up, press enter. Select your type of mouse. Select the mouse port. Enable 3 button emulation if you have a two button mouse. Select accept. Hopfully after a few seconds, your mouse will start working.
Video setup. Choose your video card from list.
Monitor setup. Select the values that closely resemble your monitor.
Screen resolutions. Select the colordepth and resolution desired. For now 800X640 @ 16bit will be good for testing.
Finish setup. This will start the Xserver at desired resolution. If all is ok, select save XF86config and quit. Or you can go back and select a higher resolution.
Now for the moment of truth. Type startx. Hopefully all is OK.

Thanks, Bleg....I'll bet you are right about the video driver. However, "XF86Setup" does not seem to be a valid command. I'm sure I typed it correctly. I will try with the other mentioned command by Kuber, i.e. "xf86config" and see what happens.

Yeah...in case you haven't discovered yet, it's 'xf86config'.

Just thought I'd share that wonderful peice of information. :D

Yea, XF86Setup is probably not installed. You can use xf86config, but is abit tougher to use. The instruction for using xf86config is basically the same.

I forgot to mention. If you are doing any configuration, you must be root. If you logged on as a normal user type 'su root', then type in the root password at the password prompt. After configuring, make sure to 'exit' back to a normal user. You can really screw stuff up if you don't

I got xf86 to work,...went through setup, and there was no listing for the Voodoo3-2000 card. I just guessed. It didn't work. I think I'm on the right track, thanks to you guys...however, I didn't log in as the root user. How can I find out what I need to set the...settings for the Voodoo 3-2000?

I have nil experience with voodoo cards in linux, but a google search brought up this:

Thanks....I, too have already done a google search, and found nothing useful, yet. Your link didn't even work. Ah, well. In the future, I will try different key words. In the meantime, I will try removing my voodoo card in the system, and reboot, which will use the 810 chipset on my computers' original monitor port to see if that works. (For the time being, anyway...I would hate to run my Windows games without my Voodoo card) : ) thanks for all the info, guys, I have already learned much. And....I will be back! : )

Worked for me, too. : ) I removed my Voodoo card, physically AND in the device manager, then reconnected my monitor to my original monitor port on my motherboard, and Linux booted up fine. I even played with it a little! Thanks for all you're help, guys and gals. Now if I could only get it working with my Voodoo card! *sigh*

With a little searching and reading, you should be able to get the Voodoo working. Can you disable the onboard video?

Yes,...normally it is disabled. However, as I mentioned, I had to disable the voodoo and use the MB port to get Linux to boot right. I can also have two monitors running at the same time.
