 This sounds like a newbie question, but...
I have a laptop dual-booting XP and SuSE 10.0, with a shared FAT32 partition for documents.

SuSE is annoying me and I want to go back to my tried and true Slackware.

I'm wondering, can I save the /boot/grub folder, launch the Slack setup, format the Reiser partition, install Slack, skip the lilo installation, copy the /boot/grub folder back, and be done with it?

Or should I let Slack install lilo, and add my Windows partition back into the list?

Also, I have to have kernel 2.6.13 or higher to run my Intel 3495 wifi card, is installing the 2.6 kernel as easy as specifying it when the CD boots, and then selecting it at the appropriate time in setup...?

If anyone has tried this, please send me any gotchas before I bork up my system. Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to just reuse your /boot/grub folder. It will be trying to point at Suse kernels that have been overwritten by Slackware. If I were you I'd just let the Slack install do what it wants with the bootloader and if it messes anything up just go add it back in later.

As far as installing a 2.6 kernel goes I think it's just a matter of selecting the right options during setup, but don't take my word for it. I don't use Slackware myself so that's just what I heard from a couple of friends.

Good point about the bootloader, it does have some very specific pointers in it. I think lilo will do what it's supposed to, but I've never tried it quite this way before.

I did some reading on the slackware site, and I think I can choose the 2.6 at boot time of the install CD, and I know I can choose any kernel I want at the appropriate time. I'll have to check and make sure 2.6 is there.

I thought you used Slack? Am I confusing you with someone else?

Must be. I've definitely never used Slack for any extended period of time. Emerge and apt-get make me warm and fuzzy inside.:)

True, I've just never really had any motivation to. Besides it's way more fun to get into distro arguments with my friends who use Slackware this way.:)

Good point there!
I'm really liking SuSE on IBM Thinkpads and my desktop, but getting it to do everything I want on this Dell is a pain.
I figure if it's going to take as much work to tweak SuSE, I might as well install Slack!
