http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=gaim

Step 1: Try the Mandrake Cooker ones to get a newer version, or the SourceForge versions should work too.

Step 2: Bookmark rpmfind.net for next time you need to find an rpm ;)

I got the latest version from http://gaim.sourceforge.net

And yes, while I have recently learned how to compile from souce (a wonderful thing, really), they do have RPMs available for your downloading pleasure. You'll have to add it to the menu yourself, though. To do so, click on the KDE menu icon (you said you're using KDE, right?), then Configuration -> Other -> Menudrake. There you can add an entry for gaim in the menu.

Good luck!

I learned by using Slackware on my laptop and buying a book ("A Practical Guide to Linux"...I believe the author is M. Sobell). It's really rough if you go away from one of the "easy" distros like Mandrake, but when you come back to it you'll know so much more...it's a really good feeling.

My suggestion is to go to the bookstore and find a book that looks like it caters to your personal level of expertise and learn from that. Start reading it like a novel - cover to cover - then after a bit you'll be able to skip around and learn what you want. Read it with your computer at hand so you can test the concepts you're learning. You'll have it in no time (that being said, I'm still lost ;))

Good luck!

i really appreciate that and to tell you the truth, i have been reading "teach yourself Linux" starting from the begining its pretty good book, although some of the terms i do not get.

what are some other great books for beginners?
